The Benefits of Group Study Sessions

It is easy for a parent to assume that a group study session is nothing more than time for their children to chat with their friends about the latest social media posts. However, if facilitated correctly, a group study session can be a powerful learning tool for all students involved. The Tutoring Center, Greer SC has more on the subject, below.

The Wrong Perception

If you can remember a time when you were at work and you and your colleagues were given a set of instructions, only to later hand in your work and realize it wasn’t at all what was asked of you, then you know how easy it can be to misperceive instructions. Transfer this to your child’s classroom where each of the students is given the same instructions and you can see just how problematic a simple misperception can be. However, in the case of your student, it isn’t an angry boss, it’s a teacher who gives a failing grade. A group study session gives students the ability to discuss their perceptions of the lesson, helping all students ensure that they not only have the same perception of what is required but that it is also the correct one.

Maybe It Was 1780. Or Maybe It Was 1790. Let’s Say 1785 and Split the Difference.

It doesn’t matter how many times you tell a student not to, you can bet that they will attempt to write down everything that their teacher says verbatim. While they may start out on track, you can bet that shortly they will be trying to remember what the teacher said two sentences ago while simultaneously trying to furiously scribble what it being said currently. As you can imagine, this leaves a student not only with incomplete notes, but often incorrect or mixed notes. Through a group study session, each student openly shares their notes, with one student filling in the gaps from another student’s note, while their notes help the next student to complete theirs. With this method, each student leaves the group study session with a complete set of correct notes to work with.
