How to Keep Calm While Taking a Test

If you struggle with tests because of the pressure around them, use these tips to reduce your test taking anxiety.

Plan Your Test Day

A great strategy that helps reduce the anxiety around a test is to plan out your test day. Go to bed early and set a wake up time that gives you enough time to get ready and eat a healthy breakfast before heading out on time. Getting to school early and arriving prepared will help you feel more relaxed instead of increasing stress. Wear comfortable clothes and carry a healthy snack in order to ensure you're relaxed and focused while taking the test.

Focus on Your Test

Many students start to feel stressed out when they realize their classmates are ahead of them in the exam. Reduce the anxiety this causes by focusing your attention on your own test. Concentrate on your work and go at a pace that's comfortable for you. Just because others finish early doesn't mean you have to.

Ask for Clarification

When you receive your test, read the instructions and scan the information. If there is something you don't understand, ask for help or for clarification. Although your teacher may not be able to answer all your questions, you can at least be sure you understand what is being asked of you.

Take Deep Breaths

If you start to feel overwhelmed while working, give yourself some time to calm down. Close your eyes and slowly take deep breaths. Focus your attention on breathing and forget about the exam for a bit. Once you're back to feeling calm, continue on with your test.
