Checking in on Your Child's Goals

Now is a good time for parents to check in with their students and make sure everything is on track for them to achieve the goals they set at the start of the school year. If you are looking for tips to help you prepare for this conversation, The Tutoring Center, Greer has the following article.

How Are They Tracking?

The first step is to learn about what your child's goals are and how they are progressing. During this conversation, it’s important that your child feels comfortable being honest, as they may tell you that they are falling behind. If this happens, be sure that you are supporting and encouraging of the efforts they’ve made so far.
  • If your child has fallen behind, look for ways to help them catch up. Providing additional homework help or helping them to reshuffle their schedule to find more time are great moves which can benefit them.
  • If it just isn’t reasonable for them to reach their goals by the end of the school year, don’t be afraid to alter their goals. Look for alternatives, whether it’s reducing the number of books they wanted to read or lowering the proficiency of an additional language they are learning.
It is never ideal to lower a goal, however, it’s important that your child spends the time that they have working towards and achieving a goal instead of simply giving up and working towards nothing.

More Goals

On the other hand, if your child feels like they will not only reach all of their goals but will have additional resources and time, consider adding in smaller complementary goals. These would include an extra 30 minutes of study time for a particular subject or finding books related to a series they are reading which they can include in their goal list.
