Learning at Home Can Be Fun!

The biggest challenge for students when it comes time to learn math is that the lessons aren’t what they would consider fun. This isn’t to say that the lessons are rewarding or that students don’t enjoy learning, it’s simply that it’s impractical for their teachers to spend their time teaching children lessons with games. It isn't an impractical use of your time, however! The Tutoring Center, Greer SC has a great game to try!

How to Play Math Memory at Home

  • Create 20 pieces of card the size of a traditional playing card.
  • Take 10 of these cards and write a math equation on one side.
  • Mark the back of each question card with a small dot.
  • Take the remaining 10 cards and write a corresponding answer on one side.
  • Place the cards on the table with the information facing up, in rows of five.
  • Now, everybody had better take notice while you count to 10 and then turn the cards over.
Now, go around the table with each person taking a turn to turn over a question card. Of course, before they find the matching card they need to solve the equation. If they can’t solve it within 20 seconds, then it’s time to move on to the next person. Not only is this a great game for kids to enjoy, but it also allows you to identify any learning challenges your child may be experiencing. For example, if you notice that your child struggles with a certain question which relates to a particular subject, then that could be a sign for you to ask a few more questions, just to see if everything is okay or if additional help is needed.
